The Public Trustee of Queensland

Motor Vehicles Buyer's Guide

Do I need a bidder’s card?

Yes. You are required to register prior to bidding.

How do I pay for the vehicle?

The payment terms are set out in the Conditions of Sale, which are included in all catalogues. All payments are to be made in cash or by bank cheque. A brief outline follows:

For Brisbane:

  • A $500 deposit is payable at the fall of the hammer.

  • The balance of the purchase price must be paid by 12 noon on the first Wednesday after the auction.

For Regional Centres:

  • A $500 deposit is payable at the fall of the hammer (if not paying in full on the day)

  • The full purchase price is payable by 4:00pm on the 2nd business day of the following the sale.

How do I register and insure the vehicle?

Generally, vehicles sold through our vehicle auctions come with a Certificate of Roadworthiness and Safety Certificate. These Certificates enable you to register and insure your vehicle once you have fully paid for it.

As well as your registration, you will be required to pay stamp duty on your purchase price. Both insurance and registration on your vehicle are payable with personal or bank cheques.

For Brisbane auctions the registration of your vehicle may be completed on-site. For vehicle registrations at regional auctions you will need to visit the nearest Queensland Transport Office.

N.B. for Brisbane auctions only: you can arrange insurance on auction day through the insurance broker at the on-site auction office.

When can I take delivery of the vehicle?

You can take delivery of your vehicle when:

  • The auction has concluded. No deliveries of cars are allowed during auctions.

  • Full payment has been received. When paying, $21 should be added to the purchase price to cover the cost of providing a Security Interest Certificate. You will need to produce a copy of your Public Trustee receipt to the QFleet representative.

  • You have registered the vehicle.

The Brisbane auction site (Pineapple Street, Zillmere) is open for vehicle collection Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 4.00pm only.

Does the vehicle have a warranty?

The majority of the vehicles sold through the auctions (eg. Fords and Holdens) have an existing manufacturer's warranty. QFleet also provides a three month / 5000km statutory warranty on most of their vehicles.

Most manufacturers offer a three year, 100,000 kilometre bumper-to-bumper warranty for vehicles complianced from 1 January 1997. To have the manufacturer's warranty transferred to your vehicle you will need to ensure the vehicle has a log book. If you are in any doubt as to whether the vehicle you want to buy has a transferable warranty, then please consult the log book for the warranty details or ask one of The Public Trustee auction staff.

How do I view the log books for a vehicle?

For security reasons, log books for the cars are taken out of the vehicles but are available for inspection at the on-site auction office on the morning of the auction. These can be viewed at the auction office and it is important that if you require a log book for a vehicle, that you check that it has one before you purchase at auction.

Do the cars have a Reserve Price?

All vehicles sold through the auction have a reserve price. This price is not made available to bidders, only to the vendor and auctioneer. You are welcome to ask the auction staff for an estimate of the price the vehicle is expected to achieve at auction, however, this price is a guide only.

How important is it to check a vehicle before the auction?

Before you bid for a vehicle at auction it is important that you check it thoroughly.

Vehicle inspection times are available (see auction catalogue) and it is your responsibility as a purchaser to ensure that you are familiar with the vehicle you want to buy.

The auction catalogues occasionally contain inaccuracies so you need to check the vehicle for all features and extras.

Some of the important things to check on your vehicle are:

  • Year/month of manufacture.

  • Vehicle accessories (e.g. power steering, air conditioning, air bags, cruise control etc.).

  • Log book, tool kits, spare wheel.

  • C/Disc cartridges.

  • Number of keys.
