GST and our fees

From 1 April 2026, most fees for financial administration services are GST-exempt for customers when QPT is appointed as:

  • financial administrator or manager by a court, tribunal or under legislation
  • financial attorney under legislation during a period of suspension of an enduring power of attorney.

GST still applies to fees for financial administration services for customers who have voluntarily appointed QPT as financial attorney under a power of attorney.

Learn when our fees are GST-exempt and when they are not

Standard fees and supplementary fees

We calculate our fees based on:

  • how we’re appointed
  • the type of service required
  • the level of service provided.

By doing this, we can ensure the fees are tailored to the amount of support required for your individual circumstances.

Standard fees that apply for all customers include:

  • personal financial administration fee
  • asset management fee
  • incidental outlays.

Supplementary fees that may apply if your circumstances require it, include:

  • real estate property fee
  • additional service fee
  • professional fees.

Personal financial administration fees

Depending on how we have been appointed as your financial administrator, there are 2 fee structures. These are listed as Schedule 4 and 5 in the Public Trustee Fees and Charges Notice.

Schedule 4 fees apply when either:

  • QCAT has appointed QPT to administer your financial matters
  • You appoint QPT as your financial attorney in an enduring power of attorney and have since lost capacity.

Schedule 5 fees apply when there's a Limited Administration Order. This is where a court has appointed QPT to administer financial matters relating only to settlement moneys that have been awarded to you.

Schedule 4 fees are based on your circumstances and the level of service we provide

To determine your fee, we’ll work with you to understand the level of service you need. We'll confirm the level of service you need within 3 months, after we've been appointed.

We'll consider:

  • your living situation
  • where your income is paid
  • how your bills are to be paid
  • how often you need contact with us.

If you live in a government-funded care facility or hospital, you may have your income paid directly to the organisation.

In these cases, your contact with us may be minimal, and so the service fee will also be minimal.

However, if you live in the community and need more financial support and need to contact us more often, this could mean the service fee is higher.

We’ll review your fees at least once a year. We do this to ensure that the support we offer continues to match your lifestyle and needs. We'll also reassess the level of service required if there are significant changes to your lifestyle during the year.

Most financial administration fees are GST-exempt for the majority of customers, so the following fees are listed excluding GST.

However, if you have voluntarily appointed QPT as your financial attorney under a general power of attorney or enduring power of attorney, you’ll be charged GST on the listed fee.

Schedule 5 fees are based on the number of transactions

Sometimes you may receive funds from a settlement or court sanction. This could be from an award for damages. If we're appointed to administer only these types of financial matters, we calculate the fee in a different way than Schedule 4.

There is an initial one-off GST-exempt payment of $6,027.14 that covers:

  • initial processes to understand your individual circumstances
  • establishing your assets
  • establishing an initial budget and financial plan.

We then base ongoing fees on the number of transactions administered for you each year.

Asset management fee is based on assessable assets

This fee applies when we're responsible for the administration of your assets, such as bank accounts or investments. We base this fee on the total value of your assessable assets, which include:

  • shares
  • managed funds
  • term deposits.

Assets we don't regard as assessable include:

  • real estate property
  • refundable accommodation deposits for aged care facilities
  • personal and household items
  • motor vehicles
  • personal jewellery.

We base your yearly fee on the total value of your assessable assets, as detailed in the following table.

Most financial administration fees are GST-exempt for the majority of customers, so the following fees are listed excluding GST.

However, if you have voluntarily appointed QPT as your financial attorney under a general power of attorney or enduring power of attorney, you’ll be charged GST on the listed fee.

Incidental outlays

We incur everyday administration costs as part of our service delivery. We recover these costs by charging a set amount based on the type of service and the number of transactions required to provide you with our service.

Since 1 November 2022, we have placed a hold on our incidental outlays charged to our financial administration customers.

Real estate property fee

If you own a property, we may provide services such as:

  • organising building inspections
  • insurance valuations
  • building maintenance.

For these services, our real estate property fee is $905.95 (excluding GST) per property, each year.

However, if the property is your principal place of residence, then we'll rebate this fee. This means if you live in the property, we'll not charge you a fee for our services.

We may also have to charge separate outlays to third parties who conduct work at the property. For example, the cost charged for fixing a leaking tap, or to conduct a building and pest inspection.

Since 1 November 2022, we have placed a hold on our real estate property fees charged to our financial administration customers.

Additional service fee

Sometimes we may need to provide you with more than our standard services. This may include:

  • collection or payment of considerable debts
  • providing instructions or other information relating to legal services
  • taking any necessary action to deal with or preserve your financial interests in a trust, business or partnership.

The fee for these additional services is calculated at a rate of $243.50 (excluding GST) for each hour.

Where practical, we'll contact you before we start any additional service that attracts a fee at the hourly rate.

Examples of where it may not be practical, is when you don't have:

  • the ability or capacity to communicate with us
  • a support person we can contact.

Professional service fees

Other services offered by QPT if needed include:

  • legal services including conveyancing
  • taxation services
  • property management services.

Fees and charges notice

All fees for our services are contained in the Public Trustee Fees and Charges Notice.
