What to expect when making your Will

Making your Will for the first time can be a little overwhelming; therefore it’s important to have an idea of what you can expect when making your Will with the Public Trustee, and also some things for consideration before your appointment.

You’ll first meet with one of our welcoming trained will-makers who will ask you for some personal details, so you should bring your current driver’s license or passport with you to your appointment.

Having an idea of your assets, such as savings, car, home, belongings and superannuation, as well as who you’d like your assets to go to (beneficiaries), will help to form your Will. If you have specific items that you’d like to leave to a particular person, you can request for this to happen in your Will.

When creating your Will, your will-maker will ask you who you’d like to appoint as your executor – which is the person who will be responsible for ensuring that your requests in your Will are carried out.

Many people choose a loved one to be their executor, however it is important to realise that many legal and financial responsibilities fall on the shoulders of your executor and they can be held liable if anything were to go wrong. It’s important to consider that at a time of grief, it may be too difficult for them to perform their duties as an executor.

With this in mind, you are able to appoint impartial and experienced organisations or professionals to be your executor, such as the Public Trustee.
